Hey Hunters,
Yesterday we had a pretty fun party over at Twitch, and revealed some multiplayer gameplay for Relic Hunters Legend!
If you missed it, here is the full video:
I played the game quite a bit and answered a lot of questions. We talked about features, story, about why loot boxes are evil, and much more!
Want to see us live again? I will be streaming live today at 5:30 PM with Sivicks, Spades13, and Renegade Pige! Follow us on twitter @RelicHuntersU to be warned of such shenanigans!
What do you think of it?
Future Updates
Next time I want to talk more in-depth about some game systems, just like I did with Explorable Ares. What do you want to see?
Friendship System ?
Karma System (Social Currency) ?
Star Signs & Food ?
Shout-Out to Fell Seal
You know me, I'm a sucker for SRPGs since way before Chroma Squad! Today's shout out is to this amazing game called "Fell Seal". There are over 20 classes to choose from, more than 200 abilities, and upward of 40 environments!
There is a playable demo available for Fell Seal on Windows, Linux, & Mac! It looks and plays the part of a classic tactical RPG, but it has some pretty cool twists of its own :)
Week #1 Video Update: Free-to-Play
– Thu, Oct 12, 2017 at 12:42:55 PM
Hey Hunters,
Our first week is over, and we are almost 50% funded! Thank you very much for supporting this game!
For this week's video I've decided to focus on explaining why we are going the Free-to-Play (F2P) route, and why should people back a Kickstarter for a free game.
Also, I'd like to update you on a few cool things:
We are working hard on getting a good slice of the game playable to show it to you. We hope we can do it in time for Sunday's weekly streaming.
We need to get the word out! While the campaign is doing good, the second and third weeks are usually the hardest ones. Spread the word! Tell your friends!
I will be doing an AMA (Ask me Anything) on Reddit today at 11AM PT. Be sure to be there and, well, ask me anything :)
Shout out: Jennifer Wilde
Today I'd like to give a shout-out to our friends over at Outsider Games with their point-and-click Adventure game called "Jennifer Wilde"! This comic-turned-game tells the story of a woman named Jennifer Chevalier and famous playwright Oscar Wilde. Wilde’s ghost, to be precise. With murder, deceit, and a beautiful friendship depicted in an equally gorgeous 2D artstyle, this game does its comic predecessor proud!
I know we have some big comics fans here in the community, so maybe this is interesting to you. Go check it out if that's your thing!

... And that's it for today! See you in Reddit.
Cheers,
~Mark
We Hear You: New Reward Tiers Available!
– Wed, Oct 11, 2017 at 02:49:52 PM
Hey Hunters,
We've been getting a lot of requests for MORE tiers that involve putting you guys and gals in the game!
The "Become A Distinguished NPC" and "Become a Playable Character" that we put out last time are already all gone!
It is a super fun thing to do, and I think that putting our beloved backers in the game like this is one of the best ways to celebrate this dream that we are dreaming together! So here we are with two more Tiers!
Become An Enemy
Who are you going to be?
You will be able to design an enemy (to your likeness or however you want it) from any one of the 3 enemy factions: the Ducans, the Kami or the Timekeepers.
This enemy will be a Champion - it is a mini-boss enemy with its own name and skills. A fearsome foe that players will be discussing strategies to beat, and a hoarder of some pretty cool loot drops that everyone is going to salivate over!
We personally recommend the Ducans, but if you want to look like a space monster or a killer robot, we are not here to judge!
If you want to create the enemy to your likeness and name, please send us a picture of you and tell us what enemy faction you want to be in. Betu will do his best to portray you in that particular faction.
We will work with you to design the playstyle and personality of this enemy, but we reserve the right to have the final word on the design - we must make sure that it stays in the tone of the game, is fun to play, and does not contain anything offensive or NSFW.
Become a Playable Character
Join the crew of the Spaceheart!
This is it, isn't it? It's the ultimate prize - to become a Relic Hunter!
It's actually a little crazy for us to do this, because it is a massive amount of work. We are talking a full Relic Hunter here, with visuals, skills, animations, customizations, emotes, a place in the story and a role in the overall Relic Hunters universe (including comics and animation)! This is huge.
Silver Fox snatched this one super early last time for $1.000 (seriously, it was up for less than 1 hour!). This time we are opening two more spots, but we are at a price point that is more reasonable considering the immense amount of work and care that needs to go into this reward.
As with the enemy, we will work with you to design the playstyle and personality of this Hunter, but we reserve the right to have the final word on the design - we must make sure that it stays in the tone of the game, is fun to play, and does not contain anything offensive or NSFW.
Let's go, Hunters!
Shout-Out to Flynn: Son of Crimson
Our friends over at Studio Thunderhourse have a delicious game that just got funded! It's a 2D action platformer with a beautiful pixelated art style, alternate dimensions, a darkness that needs abolishing, and much much more!
The juiciness on this one is just too much. We are backers and can't wait to put our hands on it!
Cheers,
~Mark
Designing Legend: Explorable Areas
– Tue, Oct 10, 2017 at 03:06:14 PM
Hey Hunters,
Starting today, we will release periodical talks about the design of Relic Hunters Legend. My intention is to dig a bit deeper into each of the main features of the game, and hopefully get you up to speed with what our current vision is.
This is the story of how we scrapped our original open-world design and created one of the features that we are most excited about in Legend: Explorable Areas.
It’s a Secret to Everyone
Some of our oldest fans may remember that, back when Legend was announced, it was publicized as being an open-world game. I am a huge fan of old-school Zelda, and some of you might have spotted the not-so-subtle references to the first Zelda game in Relic Hunters Zero. In fact, our use of “Legend” is borrowed from “The Legend of Zelda”.
Our original intention two years ago was to make an offline open-world game. A lot of things happened since then. Most importantly, you - the fans - told us loud and clear that you wanted online play. That was by far the most often-requested and talked about feature, so we knew that whatever Legend was, it had to be online.
However, an online open world presented several problems. The first one is technical: creating a big, interconnected world that allowed multiple players online is a gargantuan task for a small indie team.
The second one is gameplay-related: if we built a true open world where your decisions impact the layout of the land, how are we going to deal with different progressions from different players? If in my world I decided to open a gate, and in your world you blocked it with rocks, whose world are we playing in? And worse, if we play hours together in my world, how will that progression translate to yours? The only way to make online open worlds work is to make them really static and stale, with players unable to make a permanent mark.
Oh, and “gameplay spoilers” are also an issue. Players who already know where the secret chests are can run right up to them and rob you of the joy of discovery. Maybe that’s why Nintendo never made an online Zelda? Who knows?
Explorable Areas
We knew that we wanted Legend to have a feeling of exploration and adventure, something that the first game, Zero, could not provide. You are Relic Hunters, after all, right? So we scrapped the open world design and went back to the drawing board with this fantasy in mind: joining up with friends in an unknown land, map in hand, and just wandering about, shouting to each other when you find something interesting, facing danger, and hopefully coming out in the end with some sweet treasure.
What we came up with were the Explorable Areas. At their core, they are big, procedurally-generated spots of land with lots of hand-designed pieces of activities sprinkled on top of them. When you just want to relax and play the game at a leisurely pace, they are the best thing. You (and your friends, if you want) can have an entire generated area just for you. There will be enemies and dangers (some even of a higher level than yours!) and many rewards.
Each biome of planet Cradle will have distinct flavors of Explorable Areas to visit, such as abandoned cities, scorching deserts, and a giant asteroid crater. There are two ways to play Explorable Areas: Forbidden Territories and Treasure Maps.
Forbidden Territories
The “pick-up group” experience of Explorable Areas!
Forbidden Territories are designed to be pick-up-and-play activities that work well with either friends or strangers, and take between 10-20 minutes to complete.
You will be dropped into a big area with the goal of finding a hidden, giant treasure chest. To ensure that players work together, the chest is usually inaccessible unless other subgoals that are spread around the area are completed - such as collecting keys, discovering parts of a password, or activating beacons. This way, just by exploring, everyone can contribute to the main goal.
You may even find other interesting things, such as mini-games, smaller rewards, and mini-dungeons (that we call Caverns). You may also find out that you’re not the only ones looking for that treasure chest!
The evil Ducans will be patrolling the area, and they may try to get the chest before you do! After 15 minutes, or when you complete the subgoals to open the chest (whichever comes first), they will try to take your prize! You must defend it while a teleporting sequence is completed, transporting you (and that sweet loot!) away from harm.
Treasure Maps
But wait, there’s more! There is another way to enjoy Explorable Areas. Treasure Maps are items that you can drop as a reward from any activity in the game. They are very special, as they are not to be consumed or equipped: they actually give you your own persistent Explorable Area with some guaranteed good rewards in them!
Example of a Treasure Map
When you have a Treasure Map, it details the biome you’re going to explore, and a list of completed activities, as well as the enemy types and some special Modifiers that provide an extra challenge. Treasure Maps with higher rarities will offer more challenges, but even greater rewards.
Every Treasure Map has a special Cavern somewhere with up to three floors and a mini-boss at the end. Defeating that Boss awards the best rewards you can get from that Map.
When you play a Treasure Map, it is yours. There is no time limit, and the changes you make and the activities you complete are stored inside the item, so you can go back to it and play it again until you get 100% completion. You can trade 100% completed maps at a Cartographer NPC for an extra reward!
You can bring friends any time to play Maps with you, but you need to start the game using the Map - so everybody can share the dropped rewards, but only you can have the reward at the Cartographer!
Let’s Explore Together!
I hope you liked this brief preview of Explorable Areas in Relic Hunters Legend! I’ll be back soon with more juicy details from other parts of the game. In the meantime, let us know in the comments what you think, and what you’d like to see implemented!
Cheers,
~Mark
Shout-Out Time: King of the Hat!
Before I go, I'd like to give a shout-out to a pretty cool Kickstarter campaign that is running right now: King of the Hat. Click below for their genuinely funny video!
It's a hat-based fighting game where an evil corporate cat makes people fight on his TV show - so he can get richer! What's not no like?
