Open Development Week #3: Controller Support + Endgame Discussion

Hey Hunters,

As expected, the last couple of weeks of development have been... a bit boring. Cleaning up and maintenance are super important, though, and make up a much bigger part of game development than many people imagine!

Good news: the game is now much more stable, and we have a lot of confidence that we can move forward without any major hiccups. We have begun work on actual new features, and first in line are Input-related stuff.

Keys can now be completely remapped, with up to 2 keys for each command. We are also working on controller support, and the game is currently playable with gamepads.

"Playable" is not the same thing as "done", of course. There is a lot of polish and care that goes into making the controls feel good when you play. For mouse & keyboard we think we nailed it - your feedback gave us that confidence! We will need your feedback again for the controller support.

We still have to figure out things like the behavior of the camera, the laser sight, how much aim assist / auto-aim to use, etc.

Our current goal is to have a new version of the Demo this weekend with rudimentary controls and start a back-and-forth discussion with our Alpha tier backers about how it feels.

Alpha Keys Giveaway on the Sunday Stream (November 26th)

Not an Alpha Hunter? You might want to tune in tomorrow on Twitch, as Mark will not only talk about the game and answer questions from chat, but he will also be giving away 4 Alpha keys for immediate access to the Demo on Steam. If you are interested in playing, don't miss it!

 

Tip: there will be a Relic Hunters-related riddle to be solved! The first letter of the answer to the riddle will be used to complete the key, so make sure your Relic Hunters knowledge is sharp. There will be four riddles, one for each key, with increasing difficulty!

Let's talk about Endgame?

Since the last weeks have been kind of slow, why don't we spice them up a bit? I've been working on some high-concepts for Endgame systems and activities in Relic Hunters to make sure you will have plenty to do after you're done with the story! 

Every great RPG needs customizable and deep progression systems to keep you enthralled with goals and pet projects of your own! I've outline an idea for one such system called "The Item World", and you can check it out at this link.

Open Development Week #1: Welcome :)

Hey Hunters,

This is our first week of work post-Kickstarter, and I have to say - it feels really good to work on the game knowing that we have a passionate and engaged community with us. Thank you!

I will do my best to write updates like this every week, highlighting what has happened in development. However, if you want to follow us and provide your feedback in real-time, please join us on Discord:

 

Week #1: It's Boring Maintenance Time!

I warned you it would be boring, didn't I? Well, it was. Our first week was mostly dedicated to cleaning up messy leftover code from the Alpha demo, and preparing our project for future things.

The future things are exciting, though! We have planned for our GDC build in March, and it's pretty rad. You can check that out and follow our progress in real-time by visiting our public Trello board:

 

On the Art side, Betu has been studying new animation techniques to support some of the cool things we want to do with the game - like emotes, complex customization, etc. Here's his result on the first week:

Still a bit rough, but it's a good sign for things to come!

We did it, Hunters. We really did it.

The campaign is over, and we even got a Stretch Goal in! 

During these 31 days we revealed a lot about the game, we welcomed new fans to our community, we reunited with old friends from the Zero and Chroma Squad communities, we laughed, we cried, we had a lot of fun!

What's next?

First things first: all backers from the Alpha Hunter tier and upwards will receive their Steam keys RIGHT NOW. It's a small and simple demo, but we can play it together on multiplayer and it's already fun!

Participate in Development

All of you Kickstarter backers are now our Founders - we want to make this game alongside you. Our main channel of communication will be Discord. If you haven't joined our Discord community yet, I highly recommend you do so!

Me and the rest of the Relic Hunters dev team will be lurking on the #founders-channel as often as possible to chat with you and discuss the latest features and ideas.

We plan to open a public Trello board like we did with Relic Hunters Zero, where you will be able to see in real-time what the team is working on and what is planned next. When available, we will post the links up on social media and Discord.

What about Beta?

We don't have a fixed date yet, sorry! Of course we want it to be as soon as possible, but game development is full of surprises.

Our next milestone is a proper Alpha build (non-demo) in time for the Game Developers Conference next year in San Francisco (March/2018). Depending on how well we achieve that, we'll be able to let you know when the Beta will land!

Less than 24 Hours Left to Go! + Stretch Goals + Community Achievements Update

Hello Hunters!

The final day of our campaign has finally arrived! In less than 24 hours, this chapter in our journey ends, and another one will begin.

For the last month, we have been hard at work to try to show all of you what we have planned for Relic Hunters Legend. It was a pleasure to meet and interact with all of you, and we've been floored by the amount of love and support we've gotten in that time.  Our community continues to grow larger each day, with new Hunters joining the fray, and we're here to tell you that this is only the beginning.
